What is enriched bleached flour anyway?
Homemade pancakes! When I was a kid we always made pancakes from the box. That is until I started actually reading the label. Almost all pancake mixes are made from enriched bleached flour. But what does that even mean? I think you should add that this recipe is a healthy and fiber rich alternative to pancakes and talk about the benefits of oats.
"Bleached" means that the once nutrient-rich wheat kernel has been chemically stripped of the key vitamins and minerals that were once in the grain. Next the flour is ground and treated with chemical agendas like benzoyl peroxide, chlorine, or potassium bromate which speeds up the aging process of the flour, changing the taste, texture, appearance, and nutritional value. Once the grain has been stripped, it is then "enriched" or chemically treated to add agents back into it such as niacinamide (B3), reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate (B1), riboflavin (B2), and folic acid (B9).
The issue is these vitamins and minerals being added to our flour aren't natural or grown in nature, they are created in labs or harvested in soil and it is hard to regulate them in the food industry. To live our healthiest lives we want real, whole, raw, and natural ingredients in our diet. That's why I suggest the next time you are making Sunday morning pancakes, try this quick whole oat recipe instead that will keep you and your loved ones feeling great and toxin free!
